Each year, 750 million people around the world go hungry, and every day 25,000 men, women, and children die from starvation. This heartbreaking reality calls us to action. The good news is that there is something we can do. Together, we can rise up to serve those in need and bring hope, nourishment, and compassion to people around the world.

A quick look at gleaning

Gleaning is not only biblical—it’s the right thing to do.

Donate

Local farmers donate their surplus produce to us, rescuing it from the landfill and giving it a greater purpose.

Dehydrate

Through the power of volunteers, we wash, chop, dehydrate, and package the produce, preparing it to nourish those in need.

Distribute

We partner with trusted relief organizations to ship and distribute our food overseas, providing sustenance for people suffering from malnutrition.

The solution

The Solution to Hunger Is Growing All Around Us

In North America, more than 25% of all fruits and vegetables are plowed under or sent to landfills simply because they are the wrong size, color, shape or have reached their “best before” date. As a result, 63 million tons of food go uneaten each year.

The gathering of this otherwise wasted food and transforming it into nutritious meals is called gleaning. Gleaning not only feeds the hungry- it also benefits our planet by reducing food waste. By building strong relationships with local farmers to rescue surplus produce, and by working alongside dedicated community volunteers to process it into nourishing food, we believe Kalamazoo Valley Gleaners can deliver five million servings of produce each year to people facing hunger around the world.
